FAQ

Is the NH Research (NHR) 9430 regenerative AC load being discontinued?

Yes. The NHR 9430 series is part of NH Research’s legacy product line, which NI (National Instruments) — now owned by Emerson — has been winding down following its acquisition of NH Research. Distributor notices cite a planned discontinuation around October 2025, with spare parts and support continuing only through the end of 2026. After that window, sourcing parts, calibration, and repair for a 9430 gets harder and more expensive every year.

What does Pacific Power Source offer as a replacement for the NHR 9430?

Pacific Power Source’s RLS series (compact regenerative AC & DC load) is the direct like-for-like replacement for most 9430 configurations, and the ELZ series (high-power regenerative AC & DC load) is the upgrade path for customers who need more power headroom or grid-fault/PHIL emulation on top of standard load testing. Both are regenerative, 4-quadrant designs built for the same class of application — UPS, inverter, AC source, switchgear, and component testing — that the 9430 was used for.

Which replaces the 9430 more closely — RLS or ELZ?

For most installed 9430 units (the 9430-4 through 9430-96, spanning roughly 4–96 kW), RLS is the closer match: it covers 6–24 kVA per unit and scales to 1.296 MVA+, overlapping the 9430’s full power range. ELZ starts at 30 kVA and scales to 1.1 MVA+, and adds optional PHIL (power-hardware-in-the-loop) support — the right choice if you’re consolidating several 9430 cabinets into fewer higher-power units, or need grid-simulation capability the 9430 never had. Talk to a Pacific Power Source applications engineer with your current 9430 model/power rating to confirm the exact match.

Does the RLS or ELZ series test both AC and DC loads, like the 9430 does?

The RLS and ELZ go further: the 9430 is an AC-only load, while RLS and ELZ both test AC and DC loads from the same chassis — useful if your test plan has grown to include DC-bus or battery-adjacent work since the 9430 was first specified.

Will switching from a 9430 to RLS or ELZ mean rebuilding my test scripts or automation?

It depends on your current control setup — bring your existing test-sequence and remote-control (SCPI/automation) requirements to a Pacific Power Source applications engineer, and they’ll map out what carries over directly and what needs re-pointing.

Can I replace multiple 9430 units with fewer RLS or ELZ cabinets?

Often, yes. Both series scale well beyond single-9430 power levels (RLS to 1.296 MVA+, ELZ to 1.1 MVA+), so a lab running several 9430 cabinets in parallel for higher aggregate power can frequently consolidate into fewer, higher-power RLS or ELZ units — simplifying floor space, wiring, and maintenance. Exact consolidation math depends on your present configuration.

Who should I talk to about replacing a 9430 before it fails?

Contact a Pacific Power Source applications engineer with your current 9430 model number(s) and power rating(s). They’ll confirm whether RLS or ELZ is the right match, what (if anything) changes in your test setup, and lead times — before you’re forced into an unplanned replacement.
